A. M. Mensah has written a semi-autobiographical novel, depicting the care homes in the 1950s and 1960s England. The novel is from the perspective of mixed raced children of African and Irish heritage. The book tells a child´s story of loss and abandonment as well as their struggles of self preservation without parental support. At the time of flourishing 1960s pop culture, two young girls were being brought up by strict Roman Catholic nuns. In order to escape their traumatic upbringing they travel to Franco´s Spain where the USA military was based during the Vietnam War. This is a search of two children ultimately seeking their own self identity and self determination and the dramatic outcomes of their separate lives. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Sangita Chauhan. Has it ever struck you how so much of life involves searching for something? It could be searching for yourself, a mate, a job, a career, a new hobby, doctor, grocery store, or even a new way of living. What each of these areas have in common is they involve a search to be undertaken in order to be found. We each have been given one life to live, and it is in the searching, in all its various forms, that we find this life and what it means for us. This life I am talking about can be likened to a gem, a very exquisite and precious stone. This gem is meant for the seeker to discover at various points throughout his or her lifetime. Finding these gemstones is not a one-time occurrence; rather, it´s a deep-sea exploration that takes an entire lifetime to unearth and cultivate. Sometimes this life is found in the small things that are right in front of us, and other times it takes an excavator to bring them to the surface, as you´ve got to really mine for them. After all, these gems aren´t precious stones for no reason at all. However they come about, this life and these life moments are universal in nature, yet they are unique and personal for each one of us. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Harriet Seed.
