The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light:Fourth Estate. ePub edition Paul Bogard
A deeply panoramic tour of the night, from its brightest spots to the darkest skies we have left. A starry night is one of nature´s most magical wonders. Yet in our artificially lit world, three-quarters of Americans´ eyes never switch to night vision and most of us no longer experience true darkness. In The End of Night, Paul Bogard restores our awareness of the spectacularly primal, wildly dark night sky and how it has influenced the human experience across everything from science to art. From Las Vegas´ Luxor Beam - the brightest single spot on this planet - to nights so starlit the sky looks like snow, Bogard blends personal narrative, natural history, science, and history to shed light on the importance of darkness - what we´ve lost, what we still have, and what we might regain - and the simple ways we can reduce the brightness of our nights tonight. 1. Phil Lesh first met Jerry Garcia in 1959 in the clubs of Palo Alto, California. At Garcia´s suggestion, Lesh learned to play the electric bass and joined him in a new group that blended R&B, country, and rock ´n´ roll with an experimental fervor never before heard. In time for the Grateful Dead´s 40th anniversary, Phil Lesh offers the first behind-the-scenes history of the Dead. Lesh chronicles how the Dead´s signature sound emerged, flowed, and swelled to reach millions of devoted fans, from their first gigs at Frenchy´s Bikini-A-Go-Go for an audience of three, to the legendary Acid Tests, to packed stadiums around the world. In San Francisco during the Summer of Love, at Woodstock, Altamont, and the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Grateful Dead have been at the center of some of rock´s defining moments. Phil Lesh recounts what it´s been like to live at the heart of this whirlwind, impressing Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, sharing the stage with Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and the Rolling Stones. Lesh describes what it was like to storm heaven night after night, and the price he and others have paid. Bad management, drug addictions, depression, and insecurities persistently plagued the band members and would culminate with the most tragic blow of all, the death of Jerry Garcia. Searching for the Sound is a ruthlessly honest look inside one of the greatest American bands. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Phil Lesh. In 1955 New York City is full of postwar euphoria and glamour, and the Barbizon Hotel - the place where Grace Kelly lived when she first came to the big city - is where young women from good families stay while they launch their careers and wait for Mr Right to come calling with a dozen roses and a date night at El Morocco. Laura, a patrician beauty from Connecticut, arrives with a magazine internship and dreams of becoming a writer; Dolly, a sweet, small-town girl is working the secretarial pool and looking to be swept off her feet; and Vivian, a redheaded British bombshell with a palpable disdain for rules, yearns to make it as a singer while working nights as a cigarette girl. As the young women become friends, their lives get swept into the exhilarating, heart-breaking maelstrom of New York City. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Laurel Lefkow. Jill stepped into the nightclub ready to relieve the stress she’d collected after a busy day. A couple of handsome men caught her eye and activated her sexual imagination. It had, after all, been more than a year since she’d had a relationship with a man. She wondered what some of those good-looking guys could do to her and for a split second her imagination drifted to someplace dangerous. But in the end those naughty thoughts were interrupted by her friend, Mina, waving her over to a booth in the rear. With her olive-skin and long black hair, she would have been hard to miss. Jill stepped over and plopped herself into a seat. ´´Glad I finally found you,” Jill said. ´´I forgot how crowded this place gets on a Friday night.” ´´Yeah, this is the night the horny frat boys come out to play. As a matter of fact, I’ve been hit on three times just in the 10 minutes I’ve been waiting for you.” ´´Glad I got here when I did.” ´´Me too,” Mina said. ´´Oh, I’ve taken the liberty of ordering for you. I know rum and coke is what settles you down after a stressful day.” ´´Yeah, and I could definitely use some settling down today.” ´´Rough day at the paper?” ´´It was insane. Remember that story I’ve been working on about the strike at the auto plant? I had to deal with people evading my questions all day long. It’s enough to make want to put my fist through somebody’s –´´ ´´Excuse me, ma’am,” a man interrupted, stepping up to Jill. His boyish face seemed stretched with worry. ´´Yes? Can I help you?” Jill asked. The man said, ´´I seemed to have misplaced something around here. I’m wondering if you can help me find it?” 1. Language: English. Narrator: Theresa Stephens. Twenty-five years after the printing of his seminal 1988 book, Invisible City, Ken Schles revisits his archive and fashions a narrative of lost youth: a delirious, peripatetic walk in the evening air of an irretrievable Downtown New York as he saw and experienced it. Night Walk is a substantive and intimate chronicle of New York s last pre-Internet bohemian outpost, a stream of consciousness portrayal that peels back layers of petulance and squalor to find the frisson and striving of a life lived amongst the rubble. Here, Schles embodies the flâneur as Sontag defines it, as a connoisseur of empathy, cruising the urban inferno, the voyeuristic stroller who discovers the city as a landscape of voluptuous extremes. We see in Night Walk a new and revelatory Ulysses for the 21st century: a searching tale of wonder and desire, life and love in the dying hulk of a ruined American city.
