One need only pick up the daily newspaper to see how serious a problem violence is in today's society. Although the incidence of violent behavior in the US has fallen significantly in the past few years, there is still about an 80% chance that a person will be the victim of a violent crime during his or her lifetime. Even more troubling is the trend of increasing violence among the very young. After each school shooting, there is a media blitz of experts searching to explain how and why troubled teens sometimes turn to violence. Much of what they say is the result of research on the psychobiology of aggression, a field that has recently experienced many breakthroughs in identifying correlates of violent behavior. Some researchers claim that we are coming closer to predicting from a brain scan or a blood test whether a person is at risk for committing an act of violence. Ethical complications aside, a closer look at the neurobiology of aggression shows why we are unlikely to find a conclusive test for potential violent behavior. While there are many biological factors associated with aggression, their predictive value remains still quite low.
The Fault In Our Stars Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Gus (Ansel Elgort) share a sarcastic sense of humour, a distaste for convention, and ultimately, a love that will sweep them onto a transformative journey that they – and you – will never forget. Although the two teens face extraordinary challenges, their courage and dedication to each other prove that while life isn’t perfect, love is. Laura Dern (TV’s Enlightened, The Master) and Willem Dafoe (Out of the Furnace, Spider-Man films) also star in this powerfully moving film based on John Green’s best-selling novel. Juno Don’t miss the outrageously offbeat comedy hit that has everyone talking— and laughing! Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page - X-MEN) is a cool, confident teenager who takes a nine-month detour into adulthood when she’s faced with an unplanned pregnancy—and sets out to find the perfect parents for her baby. With the help of her charmingly unassuming boyfriend (Michael Cera – Superbad), supportive dad (J.K. Simmons) and no-nonsense step mum (Allison Janney) Juno sets her sights on an affluent couple (Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman) longing to adopt their first child. 500 Days of Summer In this anti-romantic comedy about love and fate, a young greeting card writer (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is hopelessly, helplessly searching for the girl of his dreams...and his new co-worker, Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel), may just be “the one.” But the 500 days of their offbeat relationship reveal (in no particular order) that the road to happiness can be unpredictable, uncontrollable — and unbelievably funny! This is not a love story. This is a story about love. Features songs from The Smiths, Doves, Regina Spektor and The Temper Trap.

Being a good parent is one of the most difficult, yet most rewarding, jobs a person can have in his or her lifetime. Being the parent of a teen is an especially daunting phase of the journey. As parents begin to notice the significant changes that come with adolescence (physical changes brought about by puberty, the constant angst and moodiness, and of course the classic eye-rolling and the I-know-it-all attitude), they wonder just what happened to their happy, sweet, and affectionate young boy or girl. Parents sit by amazed - and often lost and unprepared - as they witness their child morph and mutate into a full-blown pubescent display of emotions. The Angst of Adolescence: How to Parent Your Teen and Live to Laugh About It, written in a conversational, informative, humorous, and relatable style, promises to deliver trustworthy resource for parents of teens who are searching for answers and guidance about how to maneuver their way through this tricky developmental period. Dr. Sara Villanueva, a prominent psychologist specializing in the adolescent years, shares relevant research findings so that parents can be informed of the facts as opposed to making assumptions based on ubiquitous but questionable sources. Most of all, it will provide parents of teenagers with perspective in the midst of angst so they can come away with the sense that they are not alone in their experience of raising teens. Many, many people have gone through it, and we can all relate to and learn from one another. Most of what your teen is feeling and expressing is normal and falls within the expected range of behavior for adolescent development. Despite the challenges involved in parenting teens, we should take time to focus on the positive things in life and live with our child through the tough adolescent years so that we emerge on the other side with friendship and a deeper bond. 1.
